Insurance Information

Insurances Accepted:

We are in network with most insurance plans.  Many insurance companies own smaller insurance companies.  Thus, being credentialed with larger companies allows us to be in-network providers in the smaller companies that they own.  For instance, United health care owns Optum Health, Golden Rule, and several others.  Himark Blue Cross own Capital Blue Cross, Anthem Blue Cross and Amerihealth Administrators.  If you do not see your insurance company listed above, please call our office.  We are credentialed with almost all insurance companies.

Payment Options

Option 1 – Insurance:
We are in-network with almost all major insurance companies. If you have insurance and you choose to use it, our staff will perform an insurance verification on your behalf. We always ask our patient to call their insurance company as well so you are well informed of your benefits. If we are out of network (such as several patients that are from our of state of visiting family), we will gladly submit an out-of-network claim on your behalf.

When you call to schedule your first appointment, our staff will ask you about your insurancecompany. Please have your insurance card available so that we can get the information needed to perform an insurance verification on your behalf. The insurance verification allows us to get all the information needed regarding your chiropractic benefits.

Please remember, even though we are in network will almost all insurance companies, your insurance is a contract between you and your insurance. We will bill your insurance company as a courtesy to you. You are the one who is financially responsible for the cost of your health care. For this reason, we strongly suggest that you also call your insurance company to discuss and confirm your benefits.

What are you responsible for:
Deductible: This is the amount of money that you are responsible to pay before your insurance benefits are activated. Generally, deductibles renew yearly (most of the time in January at the start of the year).
Co-Payment/Co-Insurance: This is the amount of money that you are responsible to pay for your visit. This payment is in addition to the payment made by your insurance company.
Maintenance Care: This is care that happens once you’ve reached your maximum improvement level or the end of your active care phase. Non-Covered Products & Services: Examples include —Products (such as Laser Therapy, KT Tape, Othopedic Pillow, Biofreeze, Sombra, Nutritional Supplementation, etc)

Option 2 is Self-Pay:
In this day and age, insurance premiums continue to rise, deductibles increase yearly, and benefits are constantly reduced. It is your option to use or not use your insurance. Many of our patients will pay for their visits out of pocket if they do not have insurance or have high deductible plans. If you don’t have insurance, don’t want to use your insurance,  have a high deductible or limited coverage, the office of Dr. Philip O’Brien does our best to keep care affordable. We will try out best to let you know up front what your treatments will cost so there are no surprises to you and your wallet.

Important Notes to Read…
Unfortunately, insurance pays only for injuries that are defined as “medically necessary” according to their policy plans. Many of our patients are health conscious and take a very smart and responsible approach to their health care in terms of maintenance care also known as preventative maintenance.  One would think that spending a little money on prevention will save thousands of dollars later by preventing dis-ease and avoiding costly medical treatment plans, and it is very true that a healthy body suffers less disease. However, insurance companies have an obligation to their shareholders and not their policy members; therefore, maintenance is not a covered expense.

One we get you healthy, it is important to maintain that level of health. Many of our patients choose to continue on a maintenance plan. This decision is based solely on your beliefs and healthy lifestyle habits. Some patients prefer acute care while others want to stay healthy (much like getting your teeth cleaned so you don’t get cavities).  We offer this service to all of our patients and although it is a personal decision, most of them choose to continue with periodic visits to maintain a higher level of health. You will be alerted to this transition prior to the end of your active care phase.

We must perform an examination on every new patient prior to treatment so that we can prove medical necessity to the insurance companies to treating you under your benefits plan.  Some insurance carriers (like Medicare) do not cover the cost of this initial exam and therefore is an expense that is the responsibility of the patient.

Our treatment plans are formed with your best interest in mind based on what is needed to restore you to a pre-injury status. Different insurance companies have different coverage benefits. Some insurance companies will only cover spinal manipulation. If other therapies are needed to repair your injury such as manual or massage therapy, ancillary therapy such as laser, ultrasound,  electric stim, or physical therapy, and your insurance does not cover those benefits, you are financially responsible for that part of your treatment plan.

Please note, certain insurances REQUIRE us to collect multiple co-payments (commonly seen with Highmark and other Blue Plans). This means that if you are seen for an examination and are treated with chiropractic adjustments and physiotherapy, 3 procedures were performed and 3 copayments may have to be collected.

Unfortunately, we are at the mercy of the insurance companies with these plans and we are required by law to follow their rules regarding payments.

We always try our best to restore your health in a safe and efficient manner to help patients keep the costs affordable.

What To Expect

Each treatment plan is different for each patient .

Once the initial exam is completed, the patient will return for their follow up visit which consists of reviewing your examination findings, what specifically is causing your pain and discomfort, and your specific treatment protocol which will help your achieve a healthier lifestyle.

Depending on your specific treatment protocol, you will receive chiropractic manipulation to address the joint dysfunction.  You may also receive manual therapy which includes highly specific therapies to facilitate the healing process with proprietary treatment methods from a certified practitioner/physician.  Passive modalities will be used along the way to help control the pain as we progress through your treatment which may include muscular stimulation, ultrasonic therapy, laser therapy, and Kinesiotape® .  Traction or Decompression therapy may also be used.

Once a treatment time is established, treatment visits normally last anywhere from 10 to 30 minutes.  Consistent treatment is required to guide the body from a state of dysfunction to functional.

As you return to a normal state of biomechanics, treatment times will reduce because less treatment will be needed.

Lastly, as we progress in our treatment, most patients undergo a program progressive functional rehabilitation to strengthen the problematic areas to prevent further or repetitive injuries.  This may include a therapeutic stretching program, core stabilization exercises, or neuro-muscular reconditioning exercises.  Many times patients are prescribed a home exercise program.

The treatment philosophy is to educate our patient and inspire them to become active participants in their own well being.  We give you the tools and the knowledge to continue to improve your lifestyle after our treatments are completed.
